Same view. More than a century apart.

In 1912, Hillenbrands purchased Gremans Bros. and built a new power plant along with the tall smokestack you can see in both photos. The plant pumped water and also generated electricity for the town.

By 1913, Batesville residents were beginning to use electric lights. Probably purchased at Dunlap’s Supply of Batesville (they’ve been in Batesville since 1873).

Look at the change. Batesville grew up around this smokestack — and more than a century later, it’s still standing.

Take a minute and compare the two.

What can you spot that’s still there?
