We had just arrived in South Haven when we saw this.
What we were watching was a five-alarm fire at East Jordan Plastics. The smoke could be seen for miles as crews from departments across the area responded.
Firefighters ultimately used approximately 2 million gallons of water battling the fire and remained on scene until nearly 6 a.m. the next morning.
The fire also led to a widespread power outage in South Haven as electrical infrastructure near the plant was shut down for safety.
Most importantly, officials reported that everyone evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
We watched that enormous plume of smoke from several different parts of South Haven throughout the afternoon. Hard to comprehend the scale of it until you’re standing there looking at it.
Incredible work by the firefighters and emergency crews who responded.
